In the opinion of the wise however, such is not penance. On the other hand fasting is an impediment to the acquisition of knowledge of the soul. Renunciation of actions and humility constitutes the highest penance. He who practices such penance is regarded as one who is always fasting and leading a life of Brahmacharya. Such a Brahmana will become a Muni, a deity, one who is engaged in the pursuit of virtue only, ever sleepless, even if he lives the life of a householder. He becomes a vegetarian and remains pure forever. He partakes of ambrosia and will be an adorer of gods and guests. He will be regarded as one who survives on the sacrificial remnants and is ever devoted to hospitality and is full of faith who worships gods and guests.”

Yudhishthira further questions: “How can one practicing such penance come to be regarded as always fasting or as one who is ever devoted to a vow of Brahmacharya, or as one who is always subsisting on sacrificial remnants or as one always regardful of guests?” To this Bhishma replied, “He that eats once during the day and once during the night at fixed hours, without eating anything during the interval therein is regarded as always fasting. Such a Brahmana by always speaking the truth, by adhering to wisdom and going to his wife only in her season and never at other times becomes a Brahmacharya or celibate. By never eating meat he obviously becomes a vegetarian, by becoming charitable he becomes pure and by abstaining from sleeping during the day, he becomes ever wakeful."

"Know this Yudhishthira that a man who eats only after his servants and his guests have been fed becomes an eater of ambrosia, always. That Brahmana who eats only after the gods and guests have been fed, win by virtue of such abstention heaven itself. He is said to subsist only on sacrificial remnants who eats what remains after feeding the gods, the Pitris, servants and guests. Such individuals are bestowed with great felicity in their next life. To their homes come Brahmana Himself, gods and Apsaras. Those who share food with the deities and the Pitris pass their days in constant happiness with their sons and grandsons and having cast of this body attain to a very high end."

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Happy New Year 2012

Happy New Year!!!

Thanks for your support for the past couple of months including your wonderful emails and your best wishes. While most of us tend to peg these negative qualities to characters of the past, I cannot help but acknowledge that we live with people who surround us each day who are very much embodiments of these negative energies. He who robs another of his wealth is considered to be clever even though he is recognised as being a hypocrite.

The right course for every individual is that which best suits him, however right or wrong the path might be. People falls prey to delusion and allow everything that is noble to be overcome by greed. The old will betray the inexperience of the young and the young will betray the lack of alertness of the old. Cowards will gain the reputation of the brave while the brave becomes speechless like cowards.

Guest blogger Sunita
  Email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

I have been reviewing a lot of the emails sent in over the last few days and I have decided not to show any more of them on this blog. Some of the comments are very profound and it is pretty obvious that this story has touched a lot of people. I have had another email from T.S., who emailed me during the first couple of days when I first posted this story. I have confirmation that there has been a withdrawal from the occupied property. Pandit has also emailed me and I am not at liberty to disclose the nature of his correspondence with me. All I can say is that he is very much pursuing legal means to have this matter resolved.

As much as I try, I cannot seem to comprehend how an 82 year old man can be so sinister. What can he really accomplish by all his schemes and skullduggery? Does it make him feel powerful to exploit helpless women as is most certainly the case here? Must be my upbringing or something but it is difficult to see the extent to which he has gone to put his children and grandchildren through this great amount of embarrassment. His nieces and nephews all believe in exposing him simply because they have had enough of his nonsense. It appears that they no longer believe that he can reform himself. Having transformed from one angle of crookedness to another makes them believe that he will try something again in the near future. Why else would they have such a passion to disassociate themselves from him? He is one sick individual in need of professional help. He needs to be isolated from everyday people before he does something worse. I have looked at the emails coming in and from what is quite obvious, no one supports his activities. He is by no means invisible, a great deal of people in the neighborhood knows of his notorious activities and have known this for quite some time. Irrespective of whatever the outcome is, irrespective of what action Pandit and his sister takes this person remains a sore point for the rest of the family. In the last email from T.S., she indicated that a senior member of the family indicated that this man was a real terrible person to his siblings when growing up. This reminded me of some of the comments made by Mr. Singh right here on this blog.

I have been taught to respect elders but here is a case where I just cannot do that. This individual has not done anything that I deem worthy of any respect. Hopefully no one takes the law in their hands and do something silly well, other than him of course since, he seems to be an expert in law breaking. What started out here to be simple updates in the absence of Pandit Bhadase has developed into an interesting twist of interests. I am seeing that a great many people just want to say that things are wrong when they are. I am seeing that people have a great deal of compassion for the meek. I am learning here that criminal activity does not come in special age groups. Whatever emails I have read so far convinces me that there is still a lot of loving and caring people out there. What I have also discovered is that the Pandit has a lot of loyal supporters who would like to see a proper end to this dispute.

To be continued…

Guest blogger Sunita
  Email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

Sunita,

I am from the Punjab in India. The old man is not just disappointing to his family and his neighborhood but a disappointment to human beings. At 82 years of age he is useless to society, he is all used up. He has nothing positive to give back to this world, not in thought, not in deed. He becomes a burden wherever there are decent people living. Such people need to be locked away else they will only cause trouble for the people around them.

There is no chance of an 82 year old person turning over a new leaf at this stage of life. He certainly does not have many years left to live and by attempting to change anything about him is just going to be a complete waste of valuable time. Maybe he is senile and has been so for a long time which is reason why he should be removed from society.

People who are overcome by hate and greed behave in this way. All his life he was like this, it is probably only now that the present people around him are seeing it. Perhaps there are more untold stories about him that are yet to be discovered. It is most certain that he will fail in all his attempts to keep what he has stolen from the Pandit’s family. His nephew is a holy man and he steals from him? Very, very bad! This old person is broken and can never be fixed again. Good, will always overcome evil and in a short while this old foolish man will disappear from this world having left nothing behind that will be worth talking about.

Beba Singh
Punjab, India

Guest blogger Sunita
  Email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

Hello Sunita,

I have an update for you on this matter. Some close family including myself met or at least attempted to meet with Mr. Gosine. We showed up at his house but he will not talk with us nor will he let us in. We stood at the gate and it was more confrontational than anything else. He refuses to discuss the matter and is not open to a peaceful end to this fiasco. He was rude and abusive to everyone who showed up and made it clear that whatever he was doing was his business and that no one should interfere. His display of arrogance is not something I was prepared to face. I conclude that he is a jackass. His son the policeman will not see us; he does not answer his phone and is completely avoiding family in whatever way he can. He did not come out to meet us when we showed up. This can only reflect one of two things, he is either shameful of what is happening or it is a reflection of guilt.

The next day we paid a visit to the location in question and it appear as if he has started to remove his stuff from the piece of property but nothing indicates that he is in a rush to do so. His so called workers are a mean bunch, most likely carefully selected for the task. While there a small crowd of people showed up, about 18-20 people, all men and young boys. Don’t know who they are and no one bothered to ask because they were pretty loud. From what was overheard they seem determined to go into action and destroy whatever Mr. Gosine has on Pandit and his sister’s property. They did not do so up until the time that my group of people were there and I don’t know what has happened since. The police will not get involved until someone gets physical which is the sad part about it all. I am not at liberty to say what Pandit and his sister is currently doing but I know that whatever it is, this situation will not drag on for long.

If there is a confrontation at the site with Mr. Gosine, his workers and other people showing up to stop them that could be a very nasty situation. I don’t have time to waste behind him but I hope that his nonsense ends soon. My expectation is that at the end of it he goes to jail and becomes somebody’s 82 year old bitch. Such a senseless idiot deserves nothing better.

V.R.

Guest blogger Sunita

Email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

I am intrigued by all of this because my family has had a good relationship with the Pandit and his family. A bit of history might help to understand why so many people are taken up by this story. Pandit’s grandfather was a huge employer of people from Manahambre, Cedar Hill, Churkoo, Bronte and Borde Narve. I never knew him but my parents and my Uncle did and have only great things to say about him. When he passed away, Pandit’s father continued the tradition by continuing to provide employment for a lot of people. As a matter of fact he was someone that many looked forward to working for because he paid top dollar.

He provided the bread and butter for several families for his entire lifetime. Many of us remember him as a very humble and simple person. Had it not been for him our parents would have had to struggle to put food on the table and send us to school. This land is sacred to us because it fed us during the tough times in life. We are not prepared to stand by idly and see it snatched from its rightful owner. This plot of land is not the only plot that is being grabbed. Some weeks ago a couple friends and I took a walk to the location and on our way the man in question here was already on another plot belonging to Pandit’s family. He and his workers had started clearing some bush from that piece of land.

I am of the firm belief that he will not succeed with his plans. However crooked he is, he can only meet with failure. There are several people loyal to the Pandit family who are willing to stop him. It is high time that the Jackass back away and save himself a lot or trouble. Is it really worth it that his own children and grandchildren face the wrath of the many people who is so determined to stop him? Perhaps it is time that someone close to him put some sense in the old fool’s head.

Ramlakhan

Guest blogger Sunita
  Email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

I heard about this blog from a friend at work, at least about the land grab part of it and so I decided to check it out. This old goat has all the qualities of a predator. His age is no excuse why he should not be put away. Preying on innocent women, making up sinister plans and executing them without concern for the consequences, makes one wonder who else in his family he has done bad things to. One thing for sure is that he did a real job on his son the policeman.

Even if his son comes forward with a logical explanation about his role in this mess, no one will believe him. His father has done such a bang up job on him that everyone will continue to look at him with suspicion. His cousins already do, why would anyone else not do the same? The old goat did not think about what effect his actions would have on his children. What I like about this story though is that someone saw the need to expose the truth. Crime does not know age.

Abigail.
Guest blogger Sunita
email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

For the many people who does not understand the landscape of the disputed land, let me explain a few things. First of all I live in Woodland and I know not only the Pandit but his late mother and father, his brothers, sisters etc. They are all very good people don’t know how this parasite of an Uncle gets into the picture. Although I have seen him on many occasions, I never knew that he is family to the Pandit.

Woodland Road separates the landscape in two sections one side has lands that belong to private farmers, the other side has lands that belong to Caroni or what used to be Caroni lands. Either way it is state lands. Mr. Coconut Head or whatever people are calling him these days did not choose to occupy the state lands because they would lock him up and throw away the keys. This is one of the functions of the current security division that looks after these lands, to ensure that no one squats on the state lands. Instead he chooses to occupy private lands owned or leased by his niece whom he thinks does not have the will nor the power to fight back.

Someone in their email to you Sunita mentioned about workers, that’s a joke. These are people with bad reputation, no character and are far from being considered respectable. They are the type you use to make trouble. What decent people will go along with such an illegal activity? A perfect choice to work with a master plan! This is no coincidence; this man premeditated this plan before executing it. This is a form of organized crime and there is only one thing to do with him and his accomplices, LOCK THEM UP!

Tee Jay.

It is interesting to see that not only family but strangers are weighing in on this issue. I am not family but my father at some point in his life (may his soul rest in peace) worked for Pandit Bhadase father on the same piece of land. My father had nothing but good things to say about him and his family. During the course of my development as a person I can safely say that these are people who have made a huge contribution to the neighborhood. Pandit Bhadase is the type who sets the right example. Hopes that he comes out with victory in this one!

Prem Singh.
Guest blogger Sunita
email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

So I am not family or relations but I got an interesting story about the pension thing. Few years ago my mother who was receiving the Government pension at the time had a visit from the pension people. Being very sick and all that they normally pay a visit to ensure that the person is alive and all that. Fair enough but here is what happened. The saw a new TV in the house and after returning to their office, they stopped issuing the pension.
Many months after we had no luck in having them reinstating it. This is a real mean bunch of people. If you want to deal with really nasty people, this is the bunch for you. You have to be living close to the stage of being a beggar before they grant you the pension. Nothing in your house should be functioning properly, that’s what they like. Anyhow to continue, my mother became severely ill and after pleading with them on several occasions they eventually reinstated the pension. Had to wait six weeks before the cheque came by that time her illness was way advanced. She died three weeks later. The welfare people also issue a funeral grant for a pensioner to help with the funeral expenses. Guess what, it took eighteen months before they issued it. If the pensions people finds out about this man having an income other than the pension, they will surely fix his business for him. Here is a case where someone cheats and gets away with it and people like my mother has to pay the price.

Ralph

Guest blogger Sunita
  email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

Read this one!

Hi Sunita,

I have been an occasional reader of Pandit’s blog but not with any major interest until I saw the article you posted. I am also a relative of Siew Gosine but I will not address him as Uncle. That would also make me a relative of Pandit Bhadase. I don’t know where you got your information on the article you wrote but it is very true to the point. The facts provided by my other cousin there T.S. is also true. What you don’t know and most of the family don’t know this either is that some years back this joker had tried to embezzle some money from an insurance firm. His wife had gotten into an accident with a maxi taxi and coconut man here had paid some people to bear false witness in court. I never heard what the outcome of that was.

My cousin mentioned in her email to you about the policeman. I understand that when the land authorities showed up at the home to investigate the dispute it was the policeman’s daughter that met with them. I am pretty sure that she told her dad the policeman, about it. He has not as yet made any attempt to contact family nor has he done anything to undo the things that his father did. He has been seen from the Woodlands going to the fields with his father so, he can’t be all that innocent about it. It would really be a good thing to know what role he is playing in this lawlessness. Hope his father is not using him to intimidate anyone.

V.R.

Guest blogger Sunita

email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

Since I posted the last article I have received several emails from people commenting on this matter some of which are coming from family. Some of these I will post here, others I will have to leave alone because of the vulgar expressions contained therein. I will post them as quickly as I sort them out.

Hi Sunita,

Got an update for you, they have started withdrawing from the land and they are removing their belongings. Unfortunately I am a niece of the one you refer to as “Coconut Uncle” (Uncle Siew). Not something that I proud of at all. This whole turn of events have a lot of the family irate especially since it is so difficult to get some sense across to this man. My brother and I have done some checking up on what might have tempted this man to go down the path that he did and came up with the following:

By all indications it appears that the Ministry of Agriculture pays a subsidy to farmers cultivating coconuts

The subsidy is based on the size of the plantation meaning that they pay by either acreage or some similar formula

Our disgraced Uncle obviously does not want to acquire additional agricultural land because that would mean that he would have to invest money to develop the land for such purposes. Why pay taxes on the land when someone else is doing it?

Obviously he wants that subsidy money else he would not have grabbed someone else’s land

The way he did it here would have meant that he will not have to spend a lot to cultivate and as such he would profit big time from the subsidies

This is not only sneaky but fraudulent. We are still trying to determine what role his policeman son played in this plot since he has a very shady background. People in the neighbourhood have already indicated that he has been seen with his father frequently visiting the fields. What family have determined so far is that his father made this move on Pandit’s sister simply because he believes that she is vulnerable and does not have a defender. He uses her vulnerability to plunder. This in my opinion is a simple case of crime against women especially by those who not only should know better but by those who should do better.

My mother, a pensioner says that this Uncle is receiving a pension from the Government and that he also has an active income from his agri-business. She says that usually the people in charge of pensions would stop paying the pension if they find out that you have another income. So as you can see there seems to be a trend of schemes and tricks by this man. Word from his workers is that they know that he was doing something wrong but being paid to do a job, they just don’t care to get involved in what does not concern them. Although I don’t think that what they did was legal too.

I just thought that I should say my little piece on this matter and I thank you for being a voice for the oppressed. This arrogance is intolerable. The older members of the family are too old to get taken up in this issue and the younger ones are too busy with their lives even though some of them are now coming forward to show some interest. Going forward here, I wonder how this man’s children will explain to their children that their grandfather is nothing but a fraud and a common crook. I am not as forgiving as my Pandit cousin so I hope that this Uncle lives the rest of his life in shame and die in disgrace and then rot in hell!!!

Will keep in touch!

T.S.

Guest blogger Sunita
email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Law and the Lawless.....Trinidad style

This problem started a few months back when an Uncle of Pandit Bhadase walked in on a piece of land that is leased by Pandit’s sister and with the help of a handful of his workers he started cultivation of this land. Mind you, he did not ask permission to use the land because he has a grouse with Pandit’s sister because he tried a similar stunt a few years back and was stopped. Anyways, Pandit’s sister was unaware of the current situation at first but these workers rumoured the happenings in the village and as such she eventually made a trip to the location and verified that this man was now cultivating her land. Did I mention that he is about 82 years old?

Pandit’s sister reported the matter to the Governmental body set up by the state to look after lands after the Sugar Industry was shut down a few years ago. The response was fast! The Security Division attend and advised “Coconut Uncle” that he should remove his stuff from the land since he was not the owner of the land in question. He defied the order by telling the officials that Pandit’s sister was not the owner of the land either and that her father (deceased for eight years) told him that he could squat on all six acres of the land. Not true at all! Eight years ago the land was already looked after by Pandit’s sister and all relevant documents are in place to reflect same.

Having defied the order and in lying to the authorities that the land was not owned by Pandit's sister, the authorities requested the documentation for verification. Having done so, “Coconut Uncle” was told that his claim that Pandit’s sister did not own the land was wrong and that he should do the right thing and vacate the land. Not only does she have the necessary documentation but all taxes have be paid up to the current time. Having expressed surprise that all documentation is in place, this crook of an Uncle told the authorities that he will remove his belongings from the land but instead he continued working the land by spraying etc., and has made no effort to abide by the recommendations of the authorities. He continues to be in defiance.

This man has a record for sneaky activities. Back when Pandit’s father passed away, while the family was in mourning this crooked Uncle was selling off the produce on the land for his own gain. At the time the land was cultivated with sugar cane. Pandit met with him and in order to maintain peace, Pandit accepted the losses and asked him to ensure that a repeat of that incident not happen again. Mr. Crooked lied low for a while and then started plowing the land in a bid to cultivate it. Close family and friends chastised him about it and he withdrew his activities for a short while. He then started to discourage the workers who were working for Pandit’s sister and with the crumbling of the sugar industry, there was a period of uncertainty when all farmer was on a wait and watch situation, him included.

Pandit’s mother became very ill and his sister had to discontinue her other job and look after her mother on a full time basis. Her mother passed after a few years and she has been trying to piece her life back since. In the meantime Coconut Uncle diversified his own land from sugar cane to other food crops, the bulk of which is coconuts hence, the nickname “Coconut Uncle”. However, seeing that Pandit’s sister is too busy trying to put her life back together he now make a bold move and grabs her land. This time around no family can get through to him. He has chased them all away from near him. He behaves in a very obnoxious manner with anyone who raises this discussion with him and he appears to be unstoppable because one of his sons is a policeman. He does not even seem to respect his age, what a piece of crap for a human being!!!

  To be continued…..

Guest blogger Sunita

email: sunita2028@yahoo.com

Currently offline

Pandit Bhadase is offline until further notice. Hindus pay tribute to the departed souls during this period by offering tillanjali or water with black sesame seeds, in the name of their departed ancestors. Parnaava Sradha is also performed on the lunar day on which the ancestor departed from the physical body. Sradha is the act of giving with devotion to the ancestors.

Parents make tremendous sacrifices during their lifetime for their children. They suffer great financial, physical and mental strains so that they can address the needs of their children. Therefore, it becomes important to repay these debts at some point in time. Dharam Shastras recommends that this be done at Pitri Paksh because when it is done at this time, it benefits both the living and the dead. The departed becomes pleased when the offerings are made in their name and they bestow their blessings on their descendants who have made such offerings.

As part of the proceedings, Pinda Daana or the ceremony involving the offering of the rice balls should also be performed and the appropriate gifts or charity be given to deserving Brahmins or the priestly class of people. Giving charity in the name of the departed has the benefit of bringing prosperity to the giver. These ceremonies performed during this fortnight of Pitri Paksh reaches the Pitris immediately which is why this period is dedicated specifically to them.

The last day or the day of the new moon in Pitri Paksh is a very important and special day. On this day by the grace of Yama or the Lord of Death, offerings made to departed souls even though it might be made from outside their own lineage, will be received by all and sundry. Those who have departed this world and their date of death are unknown, if the appropriate offerings are made in their name on this day, they too will receive the benefit of the offerings immediately. Those people who met with violent, untimely or unnatural death, they are afforded the opportunity to receive any offering made on the Amawasya (new moon) day of Pitri Paksh.

Finally, those who departed this world and had no children will have a chance of redemption if the necessary offerings are made on this day by a friend, a relative or by anyone at all. Pitri Paksh therefore, provides a medium whereby the Hindu of the current existence keeps in contact with his ancestry of another existence in a different realm.

     email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Krishna Janamashtmi

Vishnu incarnates himself as Krishna, the eight avatar in the age known as Dwapara. Krishna’s descent on planet earth took place in the month of Bhadrapad, on the eight lunar day, in the dark fortnight, in the constellation of Rohini and His prime purpose was to re-establish righteousness and eradicate the unrighteous. Known as the protector of the cows, He from early childhood embarked on His mission to re-establish Dharma. He reminds the world that: “Whenever there is a decline of righteousness, and rise of unrighteousness, then I body Myself forth.

For the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked, and for the establishment of righteousness, I come into being. Rivers flowed with clear water whilst lakes were full of lotus flowers. Trees were filled with lovely flowers and fresh leaves and birds were singing while bees were buzzing; thus creating both a wonderful sight to the eyes and beautiful sound to the ears. The sacrificial fires of the Brahmanas remained undisturbed by the breeze that filled the air with the aroma of fresh flowers.

When Krishna was about to appear, there was a profound feeling of peace and tranquility in the hearts of the saints, the Brahmanas and other holy men. Kettledrums vibrated from the heavenly spheres, the celestial singers began to sing songs auspicious to the occasion and the celestial dancers danced in jubilation. Appropriate prayers were offered to suit the occasion and flowers were showered in a joyful mood to herald in the avatar of Shree Krishna.

Krishna performed various actions many of which can be termed mystical but his imparting of knowledge is what stands out most with his personality. He demonstrates that there are several ways to serve God and that all are worthy of regard. He establishes that spiritual discipline is one of the highest forms of sacrifice and that humility is a characteristic of the enlightened. He delivered the sacred teachings of the Bhagavad Gita on the field of Kurukshetra such that the equilibrium between good and evil can be maintained. Krishna the eight avatar of Vishnu is knowledge personified.

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Guru Purnima

First called Vyasa Purnima, this celebration is observed on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadha (July-August). It is believed that the holy sage Vyasa was born to the sage Parashara and Satyavati on this day. Vyasa compiled and presented the eighteen Puranas which are simplifications of the very complex four Vedas. Each year on this day reverence is paid to him by spiritual aspirants. However, with the passing of time this day become known as Guru Purnima and the practice of honouring family priests, swamis and others who hold similar positions have become the norm.

Hindus regard the Guru as a direct link between the individual soul and the Immortal and hence a great deal of significance is associated with this event. Many people both Hindus and non-Hindus, often question the characteristics of a Guru. Many believe that the one who has granted them mantra diksha is their Guru while others vehemently dispute that. Extreme caution should be taken to avoid confusing a teacher or one who imparts knowledge of a generic nature, with a preceptor. What are the characteristics of a Guru? Who can actually be a Guru and what is the importance of having a Guru?

Tulsidas says quite categorically while paying respects to Guru:

“Bandau Guru pada kanja, kripa sindhu nararupa Hari,
Mahamoha tama punja, jasu bachana Ravi kara nikara. “

“I bow to the lotus feet of my Guru who is an ocean of mercy and is none other than Sri Hari who is in human form. His words are like sunlight which dispels the clouds of darkness in the form of gross ignorance.”

“Gu” is one who is beyond all attributes or gunas and “Ru” is one who is beyond all forms. Tulsidas clearly defines that Guru is the one who is beyond all attributes and forms and that it is only He who has that capability of dispelling the darkness of ignorance with the light of knowledge. He is none other than Sri Hari or Vishnu himself.

In Valmiki’s Ramayana, Valmiki himself requested of Narada Muni to tell him about the glories of a man with God-like qualities. Narad is described here as “triloka gyanaha” three worlds- preceptor or the preceptor of the three worlds. Continuing with his dialogue, Narada is quoted as saying:

“Aham buddhvaa vakshyaami”

…..”having known from Brahma, I will speak on.” Brahma the Creator is the one who imparted the knowledge to Narada. This is the same knowledge that will now enlighten Valmiki.

In another stride, Mahadeva or Shiva imparted the same knowledge to Bhavani. This is the knowledge of breaking the cycle of birth and death which is knowledge of the Absolute truth. He outlines the characteristics of several types of Gurus, the bulk of which provided the core of an ancient education system in a society far removed from todays’ reality. Many of them were specialists in archery, economics, drama etc.

There are also those Gurus who impart the knowledge of the Shastras while others educate on the knowledge of the Vedas. There are those who teach the specifics of the performance of rituals and rites while others teach the method of engaging in meritorious deeds for the betterment of the community. Others are experts in Yoga and they prepare the aspirant for a disciplined life. Another focuses on the control of the senses by strict discipline and there is the Guru who elevates the atma or individual soul to the level of Paramatma or the super soul. Another Guru has the capacity of helping the aspirant to purify the mind and provide the guidance for the attainment of Self-realization. The foremost of all of these Gurus are those who can elevate the soul of the disciple to the level of the Super soul.

Having said so, examine the characteristics of Krishna who wiped the dust of ignorance of the mirror of Arjuna’s soul. He became the inner dweller who dwelled within the heart of Arjuna and controlled his mind, ego and senses. He became Arjuna’s spiritual guide causing him to rid himself of his internal enemies and accept his duty with love. Having spoken to him from different levels of consciousness, Krishna functioned not as a simple teacher but as a preceptor. He imparts to his disciple the fire of Self-knowledge that burns away the bonds of Karma. He establishes that He is the personification of highest knowledge who is beyond the pair of opposites such as pleasure and pain. He without a doubt establishes that He is Brahman, the embodiment of bliss, the Absolute and that Guru is God.

        email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Ekadashi

Ekadashi or Ekadasi is the name given to the eleventh lunar day of the Hindu month. It occurs once during the bright and dark fortnights respectively and since the Hindu month has two fortnights, Ekadashi therefore, occurs twice in each month. Ekadashi is an auspicious day dedicated to the worship of the Hindu God Vishnu and it involves fasting and abstinence which is believed to help with the redemption of sins and the attaining of Moksha or salvation of the individual soul.

One of the major requirements of observing this fast is the abstinence or rice and other grains which includes beans and pulses etc. Legend has it that a demon by the name of Maura found a dwelling place in rice and a Goddess by the name of Ekadashi emerged from Vishnu to annihilate Maura. As such a new custom began which saw devotees of Vishnu not partaking of rice and other grains on the day of Ekadashi. It was decreed that whoever observes the fast on Ekadashi day will be freed from sins and will eventually achieve Moksha. Several holy books carries commentaries on the significance of observing this fast, the method of doing so and the benefits derived from so doing.

While a complete fast is recommended, modern times are such that people have adopted compromising practices which involves still having a meal or meals but not consuming foodstuff made with rice and other grains. Then there are those people who are not in the best of health and the elderly who must have a meal at a certain time; they too have made adjustments to the fast. It is common place for people to eat fruits and drink some milk or even water.

Now each Ekadashi has a distinct name associated with it. From the first month of Chaitra in the Hindu calendar the names associated with Ekadashi are as follows starting with the dark fortnight then the bright:

Papamochani-----Kamada

Varuthini-----Mohini
  Apara-----Nirjala
  Yogini-----Padma
  Kamika-----Putrada
  Ajaa-----Parivartini
  Indira-----Pasankusa
  Rama-----Prabodhini
  Utpanna-----Mokshada
  Saphala-----Putrada
  Shattila-----Jaya
  Vijaya-----Amalaki
Parama-----Padmini-----these two occur once in two years when there is Adhika masa or an extra month in the lunar year.

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Yugadi and Rama Nawmi

The colours of Holi has faded and the spring season comes by with its freshness and vitality bringing with it the festival of Yugadi or Ugadi as it is called in most areas of South India. Yugadi is the New Year’s Day in the Hindu calendar. The word which is derived from the Sanskrit language means the beginning or the start of an era or age. The Hindu calendar is lunar based and Yugadi falls on the first day of the bright fortnight of the month called Chaitra, corresponding to March/April. This is the day Brahma the Creator, commenced creation.

Those who believe in Hindu astrology usually have their Astro forecast done on this day so that they have an insight into what the New Year is expected to bring along during the next twelve months. In some regions special dishes are prepared to symbolise different aspects of human experiences and emotions such as sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust and surprise. This day is called by different names in different regions of the motherland and there are also a variety of traditions that are associated with it.

This first day of the new Hindu year commences a holy period which lasts for nine days and nights with special emphasis placed on the nights. The first nine nights of this period constitutes a special holy period known as Navratri or Chaitra Navratri. This is a time for spiritual reawakening and as such frequent visits to temples are done. Hindus observe fasting and abstain from forbidden food and drink and perform worship unto God. The ninth day of this holy period brings forth yet another important aspect in the Hindu calendar, the observance of …..

            …..Rama Nawami

"Nawmi tithi madhu masa punita, sukala paccha abhijita hariprita.

Madhyadivasa ati sita na ghama, pavana kala loka bisrama."

“The ninth day of the bright fortnight of the sacred month of Chaitra, the moon entered into the constellation of Abhijit, which is so dear to Hari. The sun was at its meridian and the day was neither hot nor cold. A cool and fragrant breeze was blowing for it was a holy time which gave tranquility to the world.”

These were the conditions under which Rama, the 7th incarnation or avatar of Vishnu appeared as the son of Emperor Dashratha and Queen Kausalya. Many people interpret this to be the birth of Rama but is it not silly to think that He who is imperishable can take birth? Anything that is born must eventually perish. How then can He who is the imperishable be thought of as having been born? He appeared in His four armed form as the one and only Master of the Universe.

Kausalya, Queen of Ayodhya who was destined to be His earthly mother addressed Him as “O Infinite One” and pondered on how she should praise Him, the one whom the Vedas and the Puranas declare as transcending beyond all measure, who is above knowledge and beyond attributes. She continued, ”You who the Vedas and holy men declare to be an ocean of mercy, a repository of all virtues, who is the Lord of Lakshmi and lover of his devotees, has revealed Himself for my good. You who the Vedas proclaim that every pore in your body contains multitudes of universes, brought forth by your own illusionary powers stayed in my womb. Give up this superhuman form and take the form which is so dear to a mother’s heart, the form that brings joy from childlike activities.” Hearing these words, Rama the Lord and Master, who is beyond the reach of the senses, took the form of an infant and began to cry as any other infant would. Thus, marks the descent of Rama the 7th incarnation of Vishnu!

email:trinihindu@lycos.com

OM, not just a word

" …..of words, I am the mono-syllable OM….. It is by this word that all manifestations of God become accessible whether it is by invocation or by communion. Invoking OM brings the revelation of truth of all things including the innermost state and conditions of the mind. It has the power to dispel illusions and present more objective aspects of human life. Relative existence is composed of the syllable OM because it absorbs all things within itself and can also manifest all things again. It is like the planet earth which absorbs all things present on it and again manifests it at will.

OM is not merely a medium of spirituality but it is also powerful energy that is capable of transforming the physical human body. Its invocation causes the invoker to function at a higher level of consciousness which reflects on the thought process, the way one expresses oneself and ultimately by actions performed. This is actually what constitutes the philosophy of yoga. Vedic philosophy teaches that when two pieces of wood are rubbed together long enough, the friction causes fire to manifest from the wood itself. Likewise, when OM which is cosmic energy creates friction with the inner consciousness of human beings by the “silent” chanting of this monosyllable word and by meditation on it, then that which is hidden becomes manifest and that which is unseen becomes seen. The result here is the flame of enlightenment.

Considering carefully what Bhagavan Krishna says in the above verse it can be clearly seen that He is the universal fire or energy that produces all creation. He is the one into which all creation is ultimately absorbed. He is truth itself, He is Para Brahman. Knowing OM is to know Him which is to know God. Om is both the seed and the fruit; it is the beginning and the end of all. OM is the resonance of sound; it forms the connection between atma and Paramatma. It is the medium by which one ascends to the state where ego is tamed and the dualities of joy and sorrow is no longer of any significance. That is the state of the Absolute. OM is the eternal light of divine wisdom and the essence of the Vedas. It is the supreme mantra in the yoga tradition which allows us to go deep into the sound to the point of silence. When the mind attains this degree of silence, it is only then that pure consciousness is achieved. It is when this pure state of consciousness is achieved that one can truly understand that OM is God.

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Narsimha, the 4th Avatara

The festival of Holi brings to the forefront a couple of names that are unforgettable because of the significance it holds on the festival itself. Prahalad, Holika and Hiranyakashipu are pivotal characters associated with the festival however, there is one other important name that comes to mind when the story of Prahalad and Hiranyakashipu is told. While this name does not bear specific significance to the actual festival of Holi, it does have a very important role in the account of events related to the father son duo of Hiranyakashipu and Prahalad. The name is Narsimha, the fourth avatar or incarnation of Vishnu. In this avatar Vishnu appeared as a half man half lion.

Hiranyakashipu the father of Prahalad appeared on this earth by a curse but even though that is the case, he was also blessed by Brahma with powers that no other being in his time possessed. Prahalad was steeped in devotion to Vishnu and would be rewarded by Him on a very personal scale. The appearance of an avatar is directly associated to the Time Spirit and appears at defined points in the cosmic cycle. Not only does the avatar appears to restore Dharma or righteousness, but also to protect those devoted to God, as is the case with Prahalad.

The avatar Narsimha appeared in this fierce form of the half man half lion to crush and destroy the cruelty of Hiranyakashipu which he meted out to Prahalad. To protect his devote and to restore nature’s balance Narsimha destroyed the negativity which permeated not just the kingdom but society as a whole. Narad Muni said to Emperor Yudishtira that the heavens trembled when Narsimha appeared from a pillar in the palace. Prayers were offered in the heavens as it was offered on earth to pacify Him. Having seen the humility of his devote Prahalad He blessed him with long live and assured him success and peace of mind.

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Maha Shivaraatri

Maha Shivaraatri is one of Hinduism’s most unique festivals. On this night of Maha Shivaraatri prayer and worship is offered to the Shiva Lingam and various articles of worship are offered during the actual pooja. It’s an occasion that brings with it lots of joy and fun, music and dance and of course lots of colours. This festival is celebrated in the Hindu month of Phalgun which usually falls in February/March and is not restricted to India but is celebrated the world over, wherever there are Hindus. It is celebrated with different traditions in India itself and similar trends exists with Hindus in other parts of the world.

Legend has it that Holi derived its name from Holika, the sister of the ancient king Hiranyakashipu. It is a demonstration of how a sinner got burnt in the fires of her own sin. This evil king had proclaimed himself to be God and even his own son Prahalad, who was still a little boy, did not accept his father to be a God. The king tried desperately to destroy the little boy and having failed miserably, resorted to his sister Holika for her help.

Holika had powers which allowed her to be immune from destruction by fire. The evil king ordered Holika to take Prahalad into a huge fire so that he can be killed. Prahalad's faith in the real God was such that Holika's powers were reduced to naught and as such, she was burnt to death whilst Prahalad came out unhurt. It is because of this event, that Holika (a bonfire) is burnt yearly to usher in Holi. The burning of the effigy of Holika is called Holika Dahan.

In the days of Emperor Raghu, there was a Rakshasi (demoness) called Dhundhi. When she saw children alone and unattended, she would hide and jump out unexpectingly and scare them. Acting on the advice of his high priest, Emperor Raghu distributed pieces of wood amongst all the children of the kingdom. The children were instructed to make lots of noise and to shout very loudly. This Dhundhi could not stand the loud noises and she eventually left and ran away. This happened on the same day that Holika was burnt.

It is also said that Lord Shiva (the Lord of auspiciousness) destroyed Kaam Dev (the Lord of love) on the day Holika was burnt. Kaam Dev is worshipped in South India for the sacrifice he made. His worship is performed with the offering of mango leaves and flowers along with sandalwood paste. Appropriate songs are sung to mark the occasion.
Another legend associated with Holi relates to Krishna and Radha. It is believed that his mother advised Him to apply colour to Radha to make her of the same complexion as Krishna Himself. Krishna resorted to using a device sort of like a water jet called a pichkari which grew in popularity and acceptance. This tradition is very popular today and is rampantly used by lovers or boys and girls who enjoy the fun of teasing each other with the spray of beautiful colours during the celebration of this fun filled festival of Holi.

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Bhishma Ashtami

Bhishma Ashtami is one of the many controversial topics of interest in the Hindu calendar. The word Ratha means chariot and makes direct reference to the chariot of the Sun God Surya. It is said that on this day Surya, the Sun God was born to the sage Kashyap and his wife Aditi.

As time passed by it is also said that on this day Aruna, the charioteer of Surya diverted the chariot northward thereby, continuing the journey of the Sun in an absolute northern direction, a journey that would last for several months. It is recommended that worshiping Surya Narayana on this day is very beneficial.

About the chariot, well it is believed that it has only one wheel and that the chariot is drawn by seven horses. Each horse represents a day of the week starting of course from Sunday. The wheel of the chariot actually represents time, twelve months, three hundred and sixty five days and three hundred and sixty six in a leap year.

I had the privilege of discussing this subject with Swami Kathakulli of South India some years ago and his interpretation is quite philosophical indeed. Compare the above with this:

The mind is like a chariot therefore the word Ratha is symbolic with the mind. The thoughts in the human mind are many and are likened to several horses pulling the mind in various directions. However, in order for the mind to make a defined movement towards the Divine, the right set of horses should pull it in the right direction. Guiding the mind on the right path to God is in fact the intended philosophy behind Ratha Saptami.

Ratha Saptami is observed by first taking a ritualistic bath. The important aspect of this ritualistic bath involves the use of the leaves from the plant Calotropis gigantea or the bowstring hemp. Incidentally, in the Sanskrit language this plant is called Arka. While the actual procedure for taking this bath is a bit elaborate, in essence it comes down to placing the leaves of this plant on the head and bathing in the prescribed manner. After the bath prayer is offered unto Surya the Sun God and Surya Namaskar is performed. Surya Sahasranama, Surya Ashtakam, and Aditya Hridayam and appropriate chants from the Thaithriya Yajurveda Araynaka Upanishad are also performed. It is recommended that worship commence at least one hour after sunrise.

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Vedas, the origin

Religion and culture of Hindus are rooted in the Vedas. No proclaimed specialist be him historian or researcher, easterner or westerner can place Vedic recognition anytime later than 1500 B.C. Some have even placed it way before that. Even arguments that the Vedas originated from the Aryans who were the original custodians, does not really authenticate its origin or its originality. However, if one was to go by common belief that the Bhagavad Gita was delivered by Lord Krishna himself approximately 5000 years ago then, that would make the Vedas even older than 5000 years making Lord Krishna the original keeper.

Point in fact is that Lord Krishna made several references to Vedas in the Bhagavad Gita examples of which follows:
“Arjuna, the Vedas thus deals with the three Gunas…..” Ch.2, Vs.45
“I am the sacred syllable OM in all the Vedas…..” Ch. 7, Vs.8
“I shall speak to you in brief of the Supreme goal, which knowers of the Vedas call the Indestructible…..” Ch.8, Vs.11
“Among Vedas, I am the Sama Veda…..” Ch.10, Vs.22

If Lord Krishna says that He is the sacred syllable OM and that he is the Sama Veda does that not make the Vedas as old as Lord Krishna himself? Be all that as it may, the actual origin of the Vedas becomes irrelevant in today’s world. What is important is the message that it conveys. It conveys an unparalleled path of Spiritual Idealism. Prayers, hymns or even Vedic chants are born in a spiritual mood; the attitude is devotional and the mind responds to the vision of the Divine. Vedas embodies the concept of truth and eternal order with the Gods and Goddesses being the custodians of such meaningful attributes.

Vedas represents God as the absolute Supreme who is the embodiment of beauty and goodness, nobility and virtue of both man and woman. It represents the splendour of nature and does not ignore in any way whatsoever, the individual vision of the Divine for it includes masculine, feminine and neuter along with the singular, dual and plural. Vedas emphasizes the point that truth comes first and religion come last. Truth is the essence of divinity whereas God has truth as the law of his being. The Avatars then becomes the manifestations of such truth.

Prayer and ritual of the right type and the right conduct constitutes a manifested form of a truthful life with a pure heart. Eternal law is deeper than truth in its moral aspects. It includes justice and goodness and it represents Dharma or righteousness as the most ethical concept. In conclusion, the Vedas are a process of free thinking whereby no idea or discussion has been rejected.

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

The Divine

It is quite natural for people not to believe in something without any tangible proof of it. It therefore does not become unnatural for such a person to believe in something divine. It is not within the reach of the average human power to bring the Devine before the physical mind. Vision of the Divine is possible only for one who is embellished with devotion.

The divine nature of the appearance of the Divine is a great secret and it is known only to the Lord Himself and partially to devotees who might have seen His divine form. However, even those who have had vision of the Divine may not be able to describe it in any exact detail because in our daily lives, the average person cannot even describe the things which he is quite familiar with. How then can he describe the Divine? Vedas, Puranas even Shastras have not dealt with this in any exclusive manner.

The Divine by nature is always pervasive of all existences. By His might He can manifest Himself in any particular place or places therefore, it is quite rational that the Divine can come or appear in one form or another.

“Though being unborn and imperishable and the Lord of all existences, I standing over my own nature, become manifest by my Yogamaya or Divine Power.”

Those who do not understand the truth of His appearance regard Him as being born, even though He is unborn. By His own independent will, He puts on human form and appears like any ordinary mortal to those who do not know the truth.

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Vasant Panchmi

Vasant Panchmi is a festival dedicated to Saraswati, the Goddess of learning. It is celebrated on the fifth day, during the bright fortnight in the lunar month of Magha which usually occurs during the latter half of January and early February. While it is considered by many to be a spring festival, it in no way represents spring in a global way. Reason being is that it is still winter in North America. With the many Hindus living in North America it is not an easy thing to convince them that Vasant Panchmi is a spring festival when they are experiencing sub-zero temperatures.

So then, let us for the sake of convenience and taking into account the different time zones, say that it is a spring festival in certain places of South East Asia. Anyways, on this day children are taught their first word as an auspicious start of the learning phase in their life. Musicians, singers, composers and poets worship the Goddess on this day to grant them talent and success. It is also a very good time to felicitate the blessings of the Divine Goddess Saraswati for success in writing exams. Generally speaking, during Vasant Panchmi people who have a keen interest in the arts and those who are academically inclined worship Goddess Saraswati, seeking her blessings so that they can face another year of success.

These observances are common worldwide and are gaining increased momentum. However, even though the word “Vasant” means spring, the festival cannot be considered as a spring festival in North America because this part of the world is yet to reach peak winter when the festival is observed.

In 2011 Vasant Panchmi will be celebrated on 8th of February.

email: trinihindu@lycos.com

Greetings!!!

It is with a great deal of persuasion from a lot of people that I have finally decided to Blog. I think that it is going to be a great deal easier to discuss a subject or even make a comment to several people at one time rather than sending individual emails. As most of my followers would know, I posted a website several years ago which is still active (www.trinihindu.faithweb.com). Even though the site can do with an upgrade, there are lots of people who still visit it.

I continue to receive emails commending me on the effort and a lot of emails requesting information on various subjects. I have not been able to answer several of them for reasons relating to time constraints. Nevertheless, I am more than happy to have received such an overwhelming response. The website presented me with several challenges, a lot of which depended on research. While it was quite rewarding, I was later informed that some of the information posted was being copied and distributed by others as if it was work done by them. Actually, there were a couple instances of plagiarism. Interestingly, I received an email from a follower in South Africa one day and he volunteered to contact a couple people about the incident. The end result was that I got apologetic emails from the individuals in question and all was well after that. The positive side of that was that I now had a following in South Africa which is something I never expected.

The website started out as a novice idea and blossomed into something that I just could not have terminated or removed from the web. As a matter of fact it was the first of its kind coming out of Trinidad. Surprisingly, I have had good feedback from Hindus from several parts of the world including North America, Australia, England, Fiji, Guyana and even a handful from India. The result is that Hindus from all over the world have been visiting my website.

Some years back I purchased a domain and have since parked it. Hopefully, one of these days when time allows it, I will launch a new website. As you would probably know, with freely sponsored sites you can’t stop the advertisements hence, the reason for advertisements on my existing website. In addition with a new website I would most likely be looking at content that is more suited for a global audience.
I am not making promises as to how frequent I will be posting updates on my blog but I assure you all that I will do the best I can.
Happy New Year and all the best for 2011!!!

Pandit Bhadase Maharaj

Email: trinihindu@lycos.com
